The Manufacturing Process of Stainless Steel
Manufacturing stainless steel products require a significant amount of research, design, technology, and science. Stainless steel production is a multi-step process: steel scrap is melted, cast in a solid shape, heat treated, cleaned, and polished. At Suncor, we understand the amount of work and testing that goes into the quality of production with our stainless steel products!
Researching Stainless Steel
Stainless steels represent an excellent combination of strength and ductility together with corrosion resistance. Thanks to these properties, stainless steels have been necessary for the technological progress during the last century and their annual consumption increased faster than other materials. Corrosion resistance plays a substantial role in the popularity of stainless steel as it is not readily or visibly apparent as it is with other materials such as carbon steel.
Stainless Steel Production
Stainless Steel metal is formed when the raw materials of nickel, iron ore, chromium, silicon, molybdenum, and other materials are melted together. The difference in proportions of stainless steel elements determines the type of stainless steel.
The ratio of iron to other materials affects:
- How strong is the protective oxide layer is.
- How resistant the metal is too specific corrosives.
- Mechanical properties such as hardness, melting points, shear modulus, etc.
These differing ratios of stainless steel components produce different types of stainless steel alloys. Each unique combination is referred to as a “grade” of stainless steel. Grade 304 stainless and grade 316 stainless are examples to reference. Suncor Stainless provides a product gallery with many of these high-quality grades for multiple industries and applications.
Quality Control Behind the Scenes
Suncor’s Quality Control Department provides testing services for our customers and serves our internal needs as well. The Quality Control System emphasizes testing products to uncover defects and reporting to management, who evaluates the information and makes the decision to allow or deny product release. We strive to avoid issues that would lead to defects in our stainless steel products!
We provide many testing procedures to keep the highest quality of our stainless steel products such as salt spray testing and hardness testing. You can find all quality related tests and informative articles on our website in our knowledge base! Quality Control is very important when it comes to manufacturing stainless steel. This process helps avoid problems that can arise causing weakness in the integrity of the products. This is unacceptable to us, as we pride ourselves on providing the highest quality sources for stainless steel products and services that not only meet but exceed your expectations!
