The Top Five Shackles Used in the Industry

Stainless Steel Shackles are used in many different applications including industrial lifting, industrial rigging, and sailing applications. Not all shackles are made equal, so it is important to find the one that works best for your application in order to prevent serious injuries or damages. The body of a shackle is one of the critical factors that determine its use. Read more to see the top five body shapes that are used when it comes to everything shackles!

D or Chain Shackles

Straight “D” and chain shackles are collectively known as “D” shackles in reference to their “D” shape design. The “D” shackle is narrower than a bow or anchor shackle. You can use these shackles to lift moderate to heavy loads in multiple industries. These types of shackles are not good for situations where there are more than two directions of loads because of their geometry. The angled loads place a great deal of stress on the bolt side of the shackle and can cause premature failure. Remember, you can always contact us if you have any questions or concerns when choosing your stainless steel shackles.

Anchor Shackles

Anchor Shackles have a large O-shaped body. They are suitable for various industrial applications. When using for lifting applications, the anchor shackle is stamped with a working load limit (WLL). Even though there is a standard working load limit, this is not regulated. Some non-standard shackles will have higher or lower working load limits than others. Always check your working load limits and make sure your anchor shackles are rated for lifting and are tested for reliability.

Bow Shackles

A Bow Shackle typically has a larger, more defined bow area than an anchor shackle. Bow shackles are more suitable for shackling as they can handle multiple loads from different angles. They are the most common shackle made from cast stainless steel. Look for the forged variations of them for the highest reliability.

Remember to never exceed the working load limit! When choosing stainless steel products for lifting, only forged products should be considered. Proof load testing is recommended for any product being evaluated for lifting applications.

Twist Shackles

Twist Shackles are similar to “D” shackles but their body has a 90-degree twist. Twist shackles are ideal for reducing kinks when lifting or rigging heavy loads. They are also great for when you need to rotate gears and do not want to use two connectors. This is why you will find them on assembly lines, in pulley systems, or in shipping yards when rotation is necessary.

Wide Body Shackles

Wide Body Shackles are designed to attach synthetic slings such as wire ropes. The wide-body shape helps improve the service life of synthetic slings and prevents kinking. They are ideal for industrial applications involving tie-downs and rigging.
